Using Barcode Scanners

Barcode scanners, also referred to as barcode readers can be used in any size company entity and are quite simple to use. They scan the goods at the point of sale and keep an eye on their inventory level.

Even though using them has gotten easier, there are now many different scanners to pick from, which makes the work more challenging. If you want to produce a large amount, it involves investigation as well as an awareness of your unique needs.

5 Tips for Choosing the Best Barcode Scanner

  1. Type of Barcodes Will You Be Scanning

There are 2 types of barcodes: 1D and 2D. 1D barcodes should be scanned with linear barcode scanners while 2D can be used to scan any type of barcodes. You should also take the scanning distance into account.

Look for a device with  Extended Range capability or Advanced Long Range if you need to scan from a distance. These scanners can read from 45 to 50 feet away using either laser scanning or 2D barcode imaging.

  1. Type of Flooring in Your Facility

Most mobile barcode scanners are prone to damage when they fall. Consequently, your warehouse’s flooring is a major factor to consider. Will your mobile device land on concrete or a soft surface like a carpet if you drop it? For hard floors, purchase rugged barcode scanners as opposed to general-purpose scanners. Rugged devices are made to withstand abrasive environments.

  1. Air Quality in Your Premises

Is the dust in your warehouse particularly bad? What about tiny particles like sawdust? If the answer is yes, be careful to check the Ingress Protection (IP) rating on any model you are thinking about. Look for a gadget with an IP rating of at least 68 to increase the likelihood that it will survive under such conditions.

  1. Lighting Conditions

Do you work in a bright office or a dim warehouse? In low lighting conditions, your barcode scanner should have a lower brightness setting. However, if you want to use the gadget in a bright warehouse or in direct sunshine, you’ll need a higher brightness setting. Remember to request a demonstration from your vendor in the lighting that exists in your warehouse.

  1. Your Keyboard Needs

If users have to type in numbers, find a barcode reader with a number key location that is ergonomic for the workers if they are typing numbers. You need a device with larger keys if the user frequently types while donning gloves. Take into account anything else that can affect the size or placement of the device’s keys.
